Filing is… about retrieving

not about putting things away! I  know, through asking my workshop participants, that paperwork is the one biggest clutter issue for people. So let’s get it done, it’s actually easier – but very time consuming- than you think. Filing is about retrieving. If you just want to put something away, consider the bin. Just reflect on this: how many pieces of printed paper do you have that you never ever looked at again – after filing or after piling it? […]

Time nightmares – how they can be avoided

When people ask me what I do (for a living) I obviously answer that I am a Professional Organiser. If people want to know more I mostly say that I organise people’s stuff and time. The stuff thing most understand, but why organise time? I think organising time is the more important part of my work. If you have a (working) timetable for your employees and/or your family, the stuff tends to follow. I sit down with clients and sketch […]

Office Tip – E mail management

Think!!!! Take responsibility and don’t always cc everyone – just so you are on the safe side. Someone  delegated that task to you because they trust you that you can do the job and they want to focus on different matters at hand. You are actually showing that you are not quite up to the job. Ask about a company policy surrounding e mail. If your company doesn’t have one – maybe it’s your job to get the ball rolling. […]

Suspensio Filing, Manila Folders and Clear Tabs

As promised, a couple of weeks ago, I am going to go a bit more into detail about the different types of office infrastructure = stationery. Let’s start with Suspension Filing, Manila Folders and Clear Tabs. One doesn’t go without the other, meaning, the Hanging File does stay in the drawer and is labelled with Clear Tabs. Manila Folders act as sub dividers and are the part you take out. Suspension Filing is perfect for people, a colleague of mine […]

THINK about your filing infrastructure

Filing infrastructure are the containers and gadgets that contain files and things. See below for a couple of ideas (and I am sure you’ll find more at Officeworks) Most of my customers inherit a filing cabinet from somewhere and start using it, never asking themselves whether it’s the right system for their personality and their type of files. Ask yourself whether you are a “chucker” or a “tucker”. Chuckers love suspension filing, just open a drawer and fling it in. […]

how to file receipts on the go

Once you have made your decision what to keep. Here is an idea how: They are small business card boxes made out of plastic from Officeworks. Have one for your tax deductible business receipts, one for the stuff you spent with your volunteer jobs or your household. You can even create small dividers out of palm cards to have more than one category in a sachet. Always carry them in your handbag, so you can file as soon as you […]

Time MISS- management

I am part of a US based Professional Organiser group on Facebook. Organising is huge over there, and there is a lot going on in this group. And because I somehow told Facebook to send me an e mail every time someone in this group posts something (and I am too stupid to find the button to change this) I was part of a very lively discussion last week about :”what NOT to do in time management” All a bit […]
February 25, 2011

with all the natural desaster happening around AUS and NZ in the last two month, everyone should have one:   This can be a lever arch file or just a flat box. Lots of this info could also be stored on your phone, which makes it less to‘grab and run’ perhaps the only file where copies of documents are OK. Insurance policies: Life insurance, Superannuation, Health insurance, Medicare, Pension numbers copy of receipts (In an A4 sized envelope. If using […]

The Pomodoro Technique

It’s been around for a while but just lately it seems to pop up in print media and on twitter. So I had a look what it actually was. First, don’t be distracted by the name, Pomodoro is Italian for tomato and it has to do with the one and only gadget you need for this productivity tool: a kitchen timer that ticks. It basically is about putting the focus back in your workday 25 min at a time. You […]
